TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

You are responsible for making your own travel arrangements. We strongly urge you to make your arrangements early to obtain the lowest possible airfare. Each YITRC is responsible for the travel costs of their participants.

The greater Washington, DC Metropolitan Area
is serviced by three airports:

  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA):
    Approximately 5-10 minutes via taxi (estimated $10-15.00 fare).
  • Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD):
    Approximately 30-40 minutes via taxi (estimated $45-$55.00 fare).
  • Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI):
    Approximately 40-60 minutes via taxi (estimated $71.00 fare).

Taxi and Van Services

Taxicab service is available at or near the baggage claim areas at all three airports.

The following transportation companies have accessible vehicles in their fleets. Please call 24-48 hours ahead of your planned arrival to arrange accessible van service.

  • SuperShuttle: 1-800-BLUE-VAN (1-800-258-3826) is available at all airports at the baggage claim levels. Reservations for pick-up at the hotel for a return trip to the airport can be made at the airport shuttle desk. Click here for the SuperShuttle Web site. Advanced reservations (at least 48 hours) are required for accessible vehicles.

Public Transportation/Metrorail

Metrorail, the region's rapid transit system, has a station at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. It does not have stations at BWI or Dulles Airports; however, there are express bus services from the Dulles and BWI Airports to Metrorail stations.

If you are taking Metro, you should be aware of the following:

  • Metrorail is not ideal if you are going to need to bring any large equipment with you.
  • The Ritz-Carlton is approximately a 15-20 minute walk from the Metro stop.

Metrobus/Metrorail directions from BWI Airport:

The BWI Express/B30 route provides a direct connection between BWI and the Greenbelt Metro Station. The BWI Express/B30 service runs every 40 minutes, 7 days a week to the Greenbelt Metro Station, which is located on the Green Line of the Washington Metro System. The fee for the bus is $3.10. All Metrobuses are fully accessible and are equipped with lifts or ramps for wheelchair accessibility.

There are two Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Bus Stops at BWI. One is located on the lower level of the International Concourse and the other stop is located on the lower level of Concourse A/B. The B30 will pick you up outside at the bus shelter. Follow the signs that say "Public Transit."

GREEN LINE: Once you arrive at the Greenbelt Metro Station, take the Green Line in the direction of Branch Avenue. At the L'enfant Plaza stop transfer to the Blue Line going in the direction of Franconia-Springfield. Exit the Foggy Bottom/GWU station and take either the escalator or elevator to exit the system; turn left onto 23rd Street, NW. The Ritz-Carlton is approximately 3 blocks from the metro station. The Metrorail fee ranges from $1.95 to $2.35.

Metrorail directions from Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA):

Metrorail stops next to terminals B and C at Reagan National Airport. Take either the Blue or the Yellow line.

BLUE LINE: Take the Blue Line going in the direction of Largo Town Center to the Foggy Bottom/GWU stop. Exit the Foggy Bottom/GWU station and take either the escalator or elevator to exit the system; turn left onto 23rd Street, NW. The Ritz-Carlton is approximately 3 blocks from the metro station.

YELLOW LINE: Take the Yellow Line in the direction of Mt. Vernon Square/7th Street. At the Pentagon stop transfer to the Blue Line going in the direction of Largo Town Center. Exit at the Foggy Bottom/GWU station and take either the escalator or elevator to exit the system; turn left onto 23rd Street, NW. The Ritz-Carlton is approximately 3 blocks from the metro station.

Metrorail directions from Dulles Airport (IAD):

Metrobus operates an express bus service between Dulles Airport and Washington, DC. The fee for the bus is $3.10. All Metrobuses are fully accessible and are equipped with lifts or ramps for wheelchair accessibility.

Travelers should take the 5A bus from the Dulles Airport (at Dulles, the Metrobus stops at the Ground Transportation Curb (Arrivals level, down the ramp) at curb location 2E) to the Rosslyn Metro Stop. From the Rosslyn station, take either the Blue or the Orange line.

BLUE LINE: Take the Blue Line going in the direction of Largo Town Center to the Foggy Bottom/GWU stop. Exit the Foggy Bottom/GWU station and take either the escalator or elevator to exit the system; turn left onto 23rd Street, NW. The Ritz-Carlton is approximately 3 blocks from the metro station. The Metrorail fee ranges from $.80 to $1.65.

ORANGE LINE: Take the Orange Line in the direction of New Carrollton. Exit at the Foggy Bottom/GWU station and take either the escalator or elevator to exit the system; turn left onto 23rd Street, NW. The Ritz-Carlton is approximately 3 blocks from the metro station. The Metrorail fee ranges from $.80 to $1.65.

Paratransit Services

MetroAccess, the region's paratransit system, is available for visitors to the Washington, DC area that are currently eligible to use an ADA paratransit system in their place of permanent residence. Individuals that would like to use MetroAccess while attending the Institute must fill out a visitor application and complete a short interview with MetroAccess staff. The only airport that MetroAccess services is Reagan National.

Please fax your completed visitor application to Peggy Stevenson (fax: 301-495-2330) by Wednesday, June 11, 2008, in order to allow time to complete the application process and to schedule paratransit travel. **Faxing the application to Ms. Stevenson instead of the contact supplied on the form will speed the application process.

Trips can be scheduled from one to 7 days in advance of the day you want to travel by calling 301-562-5360 or online at https://macs.mvwmata.mvtransit.com/508/hiwire?.a=pHome#PROMPT once you have been issued a MetroAccess Client ID number. The Reservations Office is open daily from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm EDT.
