Commissioner's Corner

Welcome

Dr. Patricia Morrisseyfrom Dr. Patricia Morrissey,
Commissioner of the Administration on Developmental Disabilities

Welcome to the Youth Information, Training and Resource Centers Web site!

As young people you look to your future being both excited and nervous. That's o.k. You face decisions about school, jobs, where to live, and transportation. You want to make your own choices. You want to make good choices. You want to make a difference.

The Youth Information, Training and Resource Centers are funded by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD) in the Administration for Children and Families in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As a result of the activities undertaken by a Center near you, as a young person with a developmental disability you will very likely have increased opportunities to graduate with a standard high school diploma; find and keep paying jobs; and work on other life goals important to them.

Youth Information, Training and Resource Centers--YICs as they are sometimes called, reach out to youth (ages 13 - 17) and emerging leaders (ages 18 - 30) with developmental disabilities from unserved and underserved communities. The young people have opportunities to express their thoughts and make contributions in a variety of ways, such as being on advisory committees and participating in training and mentoring activities. YICs operate and reflect one key principle; their activities are shaped by young people with developmental disabilities.

We hope everyone - young people with developmental disabilities, their families, their teachers, their friends, their advocates -- finds this web site a useful tool. We encourage you to share information with others and get involved. Please visit the Grantees Projects page to find out about the programs of each of the 21 centers. Contact information for each is provided if you would like to share information or become a part of a program.

Youth and emerging leaders are a vital American asset. We want to help you spread your wings and fly in partnership with those who care about you!

Patricia A. Morrissey, Ph.D.
