Title:Digital Books Online

Description:Bookshare.org dramatically increases the accessibility of books for people with visual or other print disabilities. Book scans are now shared through a special exemption in the U.S. copyright law that permits the reproduction of publications into specialized formats for persons with print disabilities. The Bookshare.org Web site allows individuals to access books that are stored online as well as add books to the collection. Students of U.S. schools can ask their school for a free membership through the new federal funding for student access to Bookshare.org.

The guide provides a history of computer use in cognitive rehabilitation, followed by tutorials on basic PDAs, the use of handheld devices as cognitive aids, and the use of disability-specific add-on software to provide additional support. A catalog of currently-available PDAs and software is included, along with resources and links for further reading.

Title:SA to Go Screen Reader

Description:Through an Internet connection, users can access, free of charge, the System Access (SA) To Go screen reader, powered by Serotek's award-winning System Access. With SA To Go, users can browse the web, read web pages, fill out forms, and use applications that reside on the host computer. When the connection is terminated, there is no trace of the software remaining, thus delivering an efficient, nonintrusive way for people who are blind or have low vision to use computers in libraries, Internet cafés, and other public settings.

SA To Go is available in English. The first priority of the AIR Foundation is to develop a version in Mandarin Chinese, with other languages soon to follow.

Title:Access E-Learning

Description:This tutorial is comprised of 10 modules that offer information, instructional techniques, and practice labs on how to make the most common needs in distance education accessible for individuals with disabilities, and enhance the usability of online materials for all students. This tutorial was developed by the Georgia Tech Research on Accessible Distance Education Project (GRADE) in partnership with IDET Communication Inc.(IDET). Funding for the project is provided by a grant from the Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE) at the U.S. Department of Education to increase the accessibility of distance education for all individuals with disabilities.

The foundation supports organizations and projects within its mission that address important needs, have broad scope and impact, and demonstrate potential for replication at other sites.

A major program emphasis is inclusion: enabling young people with disabilities to have full access to educational, vocational, and recreational opportunities and to participate alongside their non-disabled peers.

Funding is available for both project costs and operating support, and is open to both disability-specific organizations and those that serve the general population. While requests from all parts of the United States will be considered, priority will be given to communities where Mitsubishi Electric US companies are located. Preference is given to organizations and projects that reflect collaboration among groups. Preference is also given to organizations and projects that actively involve people with disabilities in program planning and implementation.

Grants are made only to U.S.-based nonprofit organizations with tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status.

The foundation accepts and reviews concept papers throughout the year; however, concept papers should be submitted by June 1 to be considered for funding in the following year. If the concept paper is approved, the organization will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Description:CAPE explores fundamental issues of abuse, best-practices training approaches, and stories of disabled people confronting and resisting abuse. CAPE also helps teachers adapt learning activities for use at disability and senior community events, rehabilitation sessions, schools and independent living training sessions. CAPE offers learning tools that appeal to wide audiences, including stories, movies, comic book scenes, quizzes, and games in formats that learners already regard as fun and entertaining. CAPE is funded by the National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation and Research (NIDRR). All of the resources in this curriculum are available in both English and Spanish.

Title:Substance Use Among Young Adults With Disabilities

Description:This report was released by the National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) on May 20, 2008. The report uses data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 (NLTS2) to answer questions about the use of alcohol, cigarettes and illegal drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and LSD among young adults with disabilities. The report compares substance use among this population with substance use in the general population, and compares different disability categories and demographic groups in substance use and in the receipt of substance abuse prevention education and services. The NLTS2 is funded by the National Center for Special Education Research at the Institute of Education Sciences, US Department of Education. NLTS2 was initiated in 2001 and has a nationally-representative sample of more than 11,000 students with disabilities. It is complete with specific ADA requirements, picture illustrations, and some helpful tips on creating accessible environments and services.
